Oklahoma American Indian Attractions

Over the past 11,000 years, more than 440 generations of Indians have lived in what is now the state of Oklahoma. Once known as Indian Territory, Oklahoma is now home to 39 federally recognized tribes. Members of at least 67 tribes make their home within the state’s borders.

With the nation’s second largest population of American Indians, Oklahoma is a place where Native traditions, cultural experiences and artistic expressions are components of everyday life. These traditions are reflected in its many tribal cultural centers, museums, libraries, art galleries, historic sites, powwows, dances and festivals.
